The Festivals of Chinese Ethnic Minority Groups

Major Project in Bachelor Degree

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, which founded in China, Western media has often portrayed the country and its people in a negative light, fueling discrimination against Chinese individuals. 
As a Chinese person living in a Western society, I am motivated to use my designs to foster better understanding and connections between Western communities and Chinese people, challenging the stereotypes and prejudice that stem from biased media portrayals.
China is home to 56 ethnic groups, with the Han majority comprising 92% of the population. The remaining 55 groups are considered minorities. This project will focus on the festivals of three significant ethnic minorities, showcasing their unique clothing, customs, cuisine, and musical traditions. Through these visual elements, I aim to create a design language that celebrates the rich cultural diversity of China, helping to dispel misconceptions and promote a more inclusive perspective.

The festivals that I want to focus on are:
1. The Torch Festival from Yi Nation 
2. The Water-Sprinkling Festival from Dai Nation
3. The Third of March Folk Festival from the Zhuang Nation
This is the final design outcome of the project, which includes billboard poster designs, banner designs, booklet layouts, and postage stamp designs. Throughout this process, I have learned a great deal and expanded my understanding of both the design industry and my own creative potential. It has been an incredibly meaningful and inspiring journey.
